An enchanting island surrounded by the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar has much to offer intrepid travellers and here are some of the best attractions to visit.
Stone Town
A great way to gain insights into the nation’s rich history and heritage is to visit Stone Town in Zanzibar; resort properties will organise excursions to this UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can explore the city’s old quarter, once the centre of the spice trade. As you wander along winding alleyways, you will come across coral and stone buildings, lively markets and attractions like the Old Fort and Sultan Palace.
Jozani Forest
Nature lovers will be captivated by Jozani Forest not only by its pristine beauty but also by its wild inhabitants including the red colobus monkey, an extremely rare African primate. Easy to access on visits from properties like The Residence Zanzibar, this site is the island’s last native forest home to plenty of birds and butterflies too; nearby, the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre is worth heading to, as well.
Menai Bay Conservation Area
Adventures at sea await at the Menai Bay Conservation Area, the country’s largest marine protected area. Some resorts will organise excursions on a traditional sailing dhow where you can look forward to spotting and even swimming close to dolphins! The area is perfect for snorkelling too, while you can visit the deserted islands of Kwale and Pungwe with their untouched beaches and mangrove forests.
Prison Island
Amongst the other top attractions in Zanzibar is Prison Island which was once the site of an old prison and subsequent quarantine centre. The ruins of the prison can be seen to this day and on your visit, you can also encounter giant tortoises some of which are said to be more than 150 years old! The island has a lovely stretch of shoreline as well and is a great spot for some snorkelling too.
