The turtle care program in Kosgoda is working day and night to ensure the survival of sea turtles. Anyone can join these experiences, particularly during a holiday spent at one of the nearby boutique hotels Sri Lanka has to offer such as Saman Villas.
History
One of the oldest turtle conservation projects in the country, Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery in Sri Lanka has done continuous explorations and shed their sweat to ensure the survival of sea turtles.
Turtle Project
The main work of this program revolves around protecting sea turtle eggs while working towards increasing their hatching rates. Apart from that, the staff at this hatchery patrol the beaches at night to keep mother turtles safe during their nesting process. Visitors at Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery can have an up-close and personal experience with turtles, especially when given the opportunity of releasing baby turtles back to their natural habitat.
A Turtle Hospital
The Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery also contributes to the survival of these magnificent sea creatures by treating disabled and weak turtles. These conditions in turtles occur largely due to fishing techniques employed by people.
Turtles in Care
Out of the five sea turtle species that can be admired in Sri Lanka, there are four available at this hatchery including the leatherback, green turtle, Hawksbill turtle, and Loggerhead turtle.
