Sri Lanka is blessed with 5 species of turtles. The significance of this turtle hatchery is that it’s home to all 5 of these species. It was established in 1981.
The main purpose of this hatchery is to enhance the rate of hatching and reproduction of baby turtles. But, they also take care of the sick and disabled turtles and get them back into the water when the time is right.
Other activities carried out by the turtle hatchery
The officials also work hard to create awareness about the conservation of these turtles among the general public. In addition to all of these, they engage in important researches.
