Found in the Saiq Plateau, Jebel Akhdar belongs to Al Hajar Mountains. Quite contrary to the seemingly dreary nature of the region, the name Jebel Akhdar has the meaning ‘green mountain’ – the name, as it happens, refers to the hidden green bushes, natural pools, and vegetation found within the area.
Vegetation
It may be hard to believe that plants could grow in the harsh desert climate conditions of Oman, but they do, as evident from the growth of walnuts, pomegranate, and apricots around Jebel Akhdar.
Panoramic views
One of the best things about visiting Jebel Akhdar is the panoramic views. Although it’s a difficult trek, if you somehow manage to get up to the highest point of the mountain, you will be rewarded with a mesmerising panorama of the region.
Guided walks
To see and experience everything you can possibly see during your time here, sign up for a guided walk. You’ll be accompanied by an experienced guide, who can point you to the best sites of the region and add a bit of context to what you see. The trail known as the W18b is a popular tourist trail that courses through beautiful Omani villages, gardens, and orchards; this train is usually included in the guided walks.
Accommodation
Because of the very good reason that Jebel Akhdar is a popular tourist site, the region is dotted with hospitality establishments like Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort. Finding good accommodation around here is not a problem; in fact, you’ll have a long list of options to choose from. What’s more, sampling the treatments of a spa in Oman during your time here is not a far-fetched idea.
Best time to visit
The period from March to April is generally the best time to visit. During this period, the damask roses are in full bloom, filling the air with its fragrance and making the entire region come alive.
