‘Bahirawa Kanda’ when translated to English means the ‘gnome mountain’. It’s another very important landmark in the holy city of Kandy not just because of the mountain, but also because of the giant Buddha statue built there.

Why is it called the ‘Gnome Mountain’?
It may sound weird, but the folklore stories are about an evil gnome who believed to have dwelt here. According to the stories, the mountain has emitted strange noises and made the villagers fear for their lives.
Folklore
One of the most famous folklores is about the ‘devil’ that believed to have lived here. If you ask any villager about the story, you will definitely be able to hear a nice and an interesting one in which a family of a minister is involved. And the other story speaks takes you back to the reign of the Nayakkar Kings.
