Doi Mae Salong is one of the renowned mountain peaks in Chiang Rai. It is located in Mae Salong Nok sub district, Mae Fah Luang district. With a comfortable temperature all year round, the main source of income is Oolong tea plantations. Santikhiri Village on the mountain peak was predominately populated with a community of Chinese immigrants since 1961. Nowadays, it is home to many hill tribes. Highlights of Doi Mae Salong include its splendid natural beauty, cold breeze, authentic tribal culture and remarkable tourist attractions. The Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort is one of the most luxurious hotels and guests can also enjoy some of the best Chiang Rai Tours. Perched on a ridge overlooking the hills of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos, and the convergence of the Ruak and Mekong Rivers, the Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resorts is quite a unique experience.
The best time to visit this mountain peak is, in winter from December to February. Tourists can indulge themselves in a nice and comfortable temperature, admire the picturesque sea of fog and enjoy a cup of warm tea in a meantime. Moreover, tourists can wander around tea plantations and greet hill tribe people in their colorful costumes festooned with distinctive silver adornments. There are pinkish Wild Himalayan Cherry flowers, so-called Thailand’s Sakura, blooming all over the mountain. Main attractions feature verdant tea plantations on terraced slopes where tea samples and tea making demonstrations are provided. Amongst these tea plantations, the most famous ones are Rai 101 and Rai Wang Put Tan. General Tuan Cemetery is located on the hill just above the village. This elaborately decorated cemetery is a great scenic point where visitors can learn more about the past and overlook the whole mountain covered with Wild Himalayan Cherry flowers. Another scenic point to visit is the Phra Boromathat Chedi Srinagarindra Sathit Maha Santikhiri (the relic stupa in honor of the late Princess Mother) which stands 4 kilometers north of Santikhiri Village. This is the highest spot on Doi Mae Salong where tourists can enjoy panoramic views and watch the sunset.
