The Kalutara Chaithya is a stupa worshipped by many Buddhists in the country, and equally loved by tourists visiting the region of Kalutara. This is the oldest hollow stupa in Sri Lanka and thus contains a historical value too.
The speciality
It is special because of its location. When you enter the city of Kalutara- the home for several beach hotels in Sri Lanka, this large stupa will be the first thing you see over the Kalu river. This can be viewed from anywhere in the city, which is quite amazing.
The structure inside
This stupa has architectural importance too. The life of the Lord Buddha is depicted inside the structure and as the stupa has a hollow structure, visitors can walk inside and view these paintings.
The engineering facts of it
This stupa is a pioneer project in Sri Lankan engineering for several reasons. This has been engineered by late Dr.A.N.S.Kulasinghe who introduced pre-stressed concrete technology to Sri Lanka and it was also built on a pre-stressed concrete frame.
What should you know when visiting?
If you intend to visit this stupa from hotels such as the Mermaid Hotel & Club, it would be so much easier and close by so you may choose an evening or morning for this visit. Make sure you dress appropriately and note that entrance to this place is free!
