There is one large white stupa (temple) you see as you enter the city of Kaluthara from anywhere. It’s the Kaluthara Temple, also known as the Kaluthara Viharaya.
Where is it?
It’s located in Kaluthara, and of course the main landmark in the city. When you are on the way to any of the Kalutara hotels the likes of Mermaid Hotel & Club on the Galle- Colombo main road, you will come across this temple premises.
Why is Bodhiya important?
There are actually 2 Bo trees at this temple. But one of them is considered one of the most ancient trees in Sri Lanka because it’s a sapling of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi Tree in Anuradhapura.
Why is the Stupa special?
Kaluthara Stupa (Viharaya) is one of the very few temples in the world which follow a hollow structure. It’s a modern stupa that has paintings and Buddha Statues inside.
Kaluthara Bodhi today
Kaluthara Bodhi and the temple have become one of the most religious places among the Sri Lankan Buddhists. Many visitors (both tourists and locals alike) come to see this sacred attraction, especially on weekends and on Poya days.
