The Sultanate of Oman has a fascinating history combined with great modern development. The Armed Forces Museum in Oman showcases the long, complex history and development of Omani warfare and also records the history and development of Omani international relations. The lower rooms outline and highlight Omani military history while the upper rooms are devoted to showcasing Omani international relations. The Museum was opened in 1988 by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, the Supreme Commander of the Omani Armed Forces and is housed at the historic and iconic 150 year old Bait Al Falaj Fort. The Fort built in 1845 during the reign of Sayyid Said bin Sultan and is also the headquarters for the Armed Forces of Sultan Said bin Sultan. The Museum has an extensive collection of military memorabilia and included here are military uniforms, parachutes, instruments, medals and weaponry historic and modern. The remarkable weaponry collection includes every type of weapon from antique cannons and early machine guns to modern rifles.
The Museum has an interesting outdoor collection of war artefacts as well. Military ATVs, a naval patrol craft, Chieftain Tanks and Bell Huey helicopters. Included in the outdoor display are an ejector seat and a bullet proof Cadillac belonging to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. A series of dio-amas bring to life a military hospital, wartime field headquarters and artillery batteries. A military escort is mandatory for visitors to the museum.
